Borboleta - Portuguese for Butterfly.
Another theatrical costume designed and created by Liz Welch and Gill Fryers from fabric and Friendly Plastic. In the Rio Carnival section of the Fashion Show, we took inspiration from Butterflies to create a show stopping outfit to strut your stuff in.
Portuguese is the official language of Brazil and of course the Rio Carnival
Yards of iridescent chiffon adorned with star burst Friendly Plastic motifs attach at wrist, elbow and underarm for fabulous floaty and showy wings.
Garden wire and central heating insulation form the basis for the harness which carry the winglets and curlicues
Brown net (Tulle) and panels of chiffon with Friendly Plastic motifs create the flirty skirt.
The helmet part of the head dress is entirely made from FP onto which I laminated the fabric that was taken up into the wings of the head piece. The plastic was coloured using pigment powders.
The “body” down the centre of the helmet is central heating insulation wrapped with FP and fabric. To add interest to the back view I added dangles of silk cord with beads and ribbons attached.
Garden wire gives shape to the wings on the head dress and the harness, but to add stability it is covered in FP.
The coils are made from fabric covered garden wire and wrapped with FP
The butterfly motif is repeated on the breast and at the wrist in 3D.
My son said that it did not exactly look like a butterfly, but it had the “essence of a butterfly” which is exactly what I had been trying to achieve.
